If we go out in Christ’s name to speak for Him, there will always be one with us whom no man can withstand. If only we remembered this, it would make us brave, relentless in speaking the truth.
-J. R. Miller in 1909, exhorting us all to be more like St. Stephen, the first deacon and martyr for Christianity.

Dear Saint Andrew Apostle Parish

God is calling the entire parish of Saint Andrew Apostle to support Stephen Ministry.

This may mean

  • Accepting care for yourself (call or text Faye McAneny today at 301.806.0960)
  • Referring another to receive care (ask if you may help by making the call)
  • Praying for the Ministry’s success (St. Stephen, pray for us! God, bless our Care Receivers!)
  • Serving as a Professional Consultant to the group. (God bless You!)

If you have a

  • Financial background
  • Legal background
  • Medical or
  • Mental health background

you can become a valuable resource to our Stephen Ministers as they provide care. We especially appreciate the invaluable training parishioners have provided our Ministers during ongoing continuing education programs, and invite you to discuss with a SM Leader what you wished Ministers understood about your speciality in order for them to assist others. Contact us below.

What We Do

Stephen Ministers provide high-quality, confidential, and distinctly Christ-centered care and support to people experiencing any of life’s difficulties. Stephen Ministers meet one on one with an adult member of the community, typically for an hour a week, focusing on the Care Receiver’s personal situation and concern. We sometimes connect community members with care or services provided by the Church, or if needed, to a professional health provider. Men minister to men and women minister to women.

To many people, it is an extremely private matter when they choose to request a Stephen Minister. Therefore, all information exchanged between them, including their name or other distinctly identifying information, is held in strict confidence by their Stephen Minister. Stephen Ministers meet for Supervision every two weeks during which continuing pastoral education and check in statements are given so that quality care may continued to be offered, the Stephen Minister affirmed, and the direction of the process of care confirmed and facilitated. Challenges our SAA Stephen Ministers have accompanied their Care Receivers through include, but are not limited to, the loss of a loved one, illness, unemployment, divorce, parenting, elder care challenges, loneliness, military deployment, and spiritual questioning.

Looking Ahead

Though Saint Andrew Apostle Leaders, Faye McAneny, Deacon Mike Bond, and Marianne Sibal, have trained over forty laypersons to be Stephen Ministers; as our Ministry continues to grow, due to an increasing awareness of the effectiveness of Stephen Ministry, we must continue to train new Stephen Ministers in order to meet increased demand and replace time’s natural decline in our Ministers’ numbers.

Persons interested in learning more about the discipleship of pastoral care—who desire to become a good listener, empathetic and compassionate, supportive without pushiness, and who are able to devote about an hour each week to a Care Receiver while keeping everything between them extremely confidential—we invite you to apply to be a Stephen Minister, to serve those in our parish who need someone like you to walk with them through a difficult time in their life. Please contact us for information concerning the next opportunity for training.

Stephen Ministry Introductory Video: video.

Recognizing the importance of our Pastor’s time to accomplish what only a Priest may do, St. Andrew Apostle Parish launched its Stephen Ministry in 2012 to provide our congregation with a team of lay caregivers equipped to help Father address areas of concern in parishioners’ lives where Holy Orders was not a necessity.

Stephen Ministers, men and women trained and supervised by Stephen Leaders, approved by and commissioned by our Pastor through Stephen Ministries, Inc. of St. Louis, go through an initial training period of 50 hours before they are scrutinized by the Pastor, pledge to serve one Care Receiver at a time, and are Commissioned by Father before the Congregation for which they promise to care.
