St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Port Arthur

Diocese of Beaumont, South Texas

A Message of Appeal from Father Mark Thomas Ameh, M.S.P.

to the People of Saint Andrew Apostle Catholic Church

The parish is made up of about 151 registered families.  About 125 families attend Mass every weekend.  St John is predominantly an African American Community. Most of the parishioners are elderly; there are very few young people in the parish.

Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas on August 25 and brought massive flooding to the Beaumont area on August 29. Flood water in the church rose to about 13 inches high while the water level in the rectory was about 18 inches high.

The church rectory and parish office lost most of its valuables.  The church equally lost most of its valuables such as the organ and piano, all of the pews, wooden tables, chairs, hymnals and Bibles, choir robes, microphone and stand, speakers, and a few vestments.

“The donation is going towards replacing all the damaged goods in the office like printers, photocopiers, computers, laptops, and the house furniture in the rectory like beds, chairs and tables, freezers, washing machine and dryers. We are also looking forward to replace our pews, and altar, hymnals and missalettes.”
