A Message of Appeal from Monsignor Williams John-Lewis

The Parish of Our Lady of Fatima, Newtown, Dominica

Our Lady of Fatima Parish spreads over four communities, the mother church in Newtown and three nearby chapels. There are about 500 parishioners.

Damage from Category 5 Hurricane Maria to Roseau, the capital of Dominica, was severe and widespread when it made landfall on September 18. Only two weeks before, Dominica experienced heavy rain and wind as the result of the passage of Hurricane Irma.

All of the Our Lady of Fatima parishioners were affected by the storm, their residences losing windows, ceilings, and doors. Twenty percent of parishioners lost everything. The roof of the main church was partly damaged and the interior had major damage, including complete loss of all electronic equipment. All three chapels were damaged, but Holy Spirit Chapel was lost completely.

The parish has been delivering food packages to those affected by the storm.

In this area, the Convent Preparatory School and the Convent High School also have devastating damages and communication is compromised.
